Ever since I knew that I was going to be having a baby, I knew I would need to try and find something that helped the baby to sleep. With M.E. and lack of sleep, it makes for pretty horrible cocktail. I mean it’s not like sleep actually makes me feel any better but without it, the adrenaline kicks in.
As soon as I found out about white noise toys, I looked into which one would be best. The family business that created Ewan the Dream Sheep were high on the list as potentials to try. The lady who runs the social media side of the company, also sufferers with M.E. so it was great to see how a white noise toy had helped her with the sleepless nights.
We got sent a Ewan deluxe (before the new deluxe edition came out) to write a review on and see how if it would work. Ewan is a cuddly sheep toy that brightens up any cot with it’s cute design. It has a Velcro tail, which is useful for if you are wanting to hang the toy on the cot, as when babies are little, it is advised not to have toys in the crib whilst the baby sleeps.
Ewan makes different sounds, including the heartbeat, the sound of rain and other white noise sounds. This is great because it can get a tad monotonous, listening to the same sound over and over again! He also gives a pink glow, which replicated the womb and this is particularly good with the heartbeat white noise sound, as it mimics what a baby would be able to hear and see whilst inside you.
It plays continuously for half an hour before switching off when the baby has settled. It has got a sleep sensor but I have to say this is the part of Ewan that I think could be improved. When it plays for just half an hour before turning off, you have to keep getting up to restart it, which can be frustrating. I think there is meant to be a cry sensor but when Felicity has been crying, it has still turned off.
I know that the new deluxe Ewan has a vastly improved model. It plays for four hours before turning off, which is much more user friendly.
Overall, I think that it is a really good white noise toy. I am particularly interested in the newer one that lasts for longer. Felicity really settles to the sound of white noise, which gives us a bonus little bit more sleep. I would say that having some sort of white noise toy is quite essential in the early days and has become a life saviour for me!
